Community gardens need more than space and sunshine to thrive. They take neighbors, shared responsibility, and the resources to keep growing season after season.

Your donation will support the Garden Steward program at two Southside gardens – Blackwell Community Garden and Stockton Community Garden – helping provide the materials, tools, and resources needed to care for these shared neighborhood spaces.

Supporting the Garden Stewards

Blackwell and Stockton Community Gardens are managed through Richmond Grows Gardens, an official community gardening program managed by the City of Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities. Garden Stewards are volunteer community members who work together to care for the gardens, maintain shared spaces, and help shape how the gardens serve their neighborhoods. Southside ReLeaf serves as a fiscal sponsor for the Blackwell and Stockton gardens.

What Your Dollars Grow

Your donation can help Garden Stewards purchase or access the resources they need to keep their gardens healthy and welcoming, including:

  • Wood, paint, and other materials for garden projects and repairs.
  • Seeds, plants, soil amendments, and other growing supplies.
  • Pest management and garden maintenance supplies.
  • Watering cans, hand tools, and other equipment.
  • Tool rentals through the Richmond Community ToolBank.
  • Other supplies needed as the gardens' needs evolve.

These gardens currently have no dedicated funding source. Your donations help make them possible. Because every garden has different and changing needs, we will use donations where they can make the greatest difference across Blackwell and Stockton.

Growing More Than Food

Blackwell and Stockton gardens grow nourishing food and make fresh produce more accessible in communities where grocery stores and other sources of fresh food may be harder to reach. These spaces are also places for community connection, gathering, and outdoor learning, where neighbors can learn new skills, deepen relationships, and work together to care for their communities.

Your support gives Garden Stewards the resources they need to keep that work going. Thank you for helping Southside community gardens grow.
